2 agents in Alex Pretti shooting placed on leave: Live updates.
Tensions remain high as immigration authorities remain in Minnesota and after a man doused a Rep. Ilhan Omar with an unknown substance.
Two immigration agents involved in the deadly shooting of Alex Pretti in Minneapolis have been placed on administrative leave, officials said, as the Trump administration grapples with backlash over its immigration enforcement in Minnesota.
The Department of Homeland Security did not say when the two agents – a Border Patrol agent and a U.S. Customs and Border Protection officer – were placed on leave, but said in a statement the move is "standard protocol."
A day after the shooting, Border Patrol commander Gregory Bovino has said the involved agents were still in the field, but were moved out of Minneapolis, sparking outrage, including among some Republicans. Bovino has since been replaced in Minnesota by White House border czar Tom Homan.
Pretti's killing – and the administration's reaction to it – has sparked friction in the Republican party, calls for Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem to be fired and raised the threat of a partial government shutdown. Trump and his allies have taken a softer tone after top officials initially described Pretti, an ICU nurse, as a "domestic terrorist" and "assassin."
While the president vows to "de-escalate" the situation in Minnesota, he warned Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey was "playing with fire" after the local official said the city would not enforce federal immigration laws. This comes after Homan, who has taken over operations in Minnesota, said he had "productive" meetings with Frey and Gov. Tim Walz.
